Great Rewards for Higher Interest Rate - Is it Worth It?
It depends.
That’s the answer everyone hates, but it’s my favorite answer to give since then I’m assured that I’m never wrong. But really, in general credit card issuers will provide seemingly excellent rewards in exchange for higher rates specified in the fine print table on the back of the solicitation mail. Low rate cards can have APRs as low as 7.99% such as the Pulaski Bank Credit Card. Reward cards can have APRs significantly higher at 15.99%.
There’s a basic example:
As you can see, the more you revolve the more it costs and the less it makes sense to use a Rewards Card. However, the assumption above uses 1% rewards benefit, by checking out these Reward Credit Cards, there are plenty that provide double even triple the benefit that would change the analysis above. In the above example if you revolved less than $1,250 then it would be worthwhile to get a rewards card.
So, as you can see, it depends.
There are great reward cards with low rates AND great rewards. Below I have listed a few that which you can apply for online:
- Bank of America Visa Signature® WorldPoints™ Rewards - 9.99% APR ; 1 point per $1 spent
- Discover® More Card - 10.99% APR ; up tp 5% cash back
- Discover® Open Road Card - 10.99% APR ; 5% cash back on gas ; 1% cash back on other purchases
