More and more we hear of sophisticated credit card scams such as hackers attacking website and collecting data. However, it is still too common to fall victim to the mini credit card skimmers that are used at various locations:
- By servers at restaurants
- Attached to legitimate bank ATMs
- By salepeople at store
Today I randomly came upon this product:
Credit Card Skimmer
This is a portable card skimmer that is publicly and widely being sold on Alibaba (by a company based out of Pakistan no less). These devices can be modified to be hidden in your palm or attached to an ATM. Little technical knowledge is required to operate these.
How do you avoid getting scammed?
- Never let your credit card out of your sight
- Call your bank and request a "Chip & PIN" credit card with a gold chip on the front. These are becoming more and more widely available in the US (we're way behind Europe and the rest of the world!)
- Know your fraud benefits. Almost all credit cards have a 100% fraud protection service
- Keep an eye on suspicious transactions and notify your bank immediately if you see an unrecognized transaction.
With some vigilance, you should be able to avoid being scammed or at the least get your money back. But avoidance is the best as it takes many weeks to file a claim and get it processed. Many claims will also alert the credit card companies thus making your life much much more difficult.

Hilarious! I swear I seen some dude at restaurant palming one of these. Wish I read this earlier.
I’m surprised you even saw it. They make them tiny nowadays. I know someone anonymous of course that has admitted to doing this before. They swipe it in their palm before getting the card to the cashier for regular processing. The plan reader stores the info from the mag stripe for download later. I can’t wait until the chip and pin system is more prevalent in the USA. C’mon! Why are we so backwards when it comes to this type of tech?
I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was wondering what all is needed to get setup? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very internet smart so I’m not 100% sure. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
